Amazing Upcoversion still! March 19, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
It is a fact that on February 19, 2008, Toshiba officially announced that after a "thorough review of its overall strategy" they have decided to no longer develop, manufacture, and market HD DVD players and recorders. The company has reduced shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels and expects to be out of the HD DVD business by the end of March 2008. Future availability of HD DVD discs is unknown. HD DVD players will continue to play HD DVD discs and upconvert standard DVD discs to 1080p high-definition resolution.
Nevertheless, I just watched my first HD DVD, and all I can say is WOW! The picture quality of 1080p/24 is amazing. This player also does a nice job on SD DVD,the upconversion to 1080i looks great too. I have this player connected to LG 1080p TV via HDMI. This is the finest picture and sound combination I have ever owned. I am looking forward to more releases on HD DVD, Amazon has a great selection at great prices.

i think this is value for money. just a shame that toshiba have dropped hd-dvd like a hot coal. shame on toshiba as this machine is a good machine. so if you want to get into hidef on the cheap. then this is the one. but done get to excited to a large library of titles. i would like to see the blue ray recorders over here now.
Great Deal - get them while you can March 17, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Have to disagree with anyone who says not to buy one. Most buyers will know HD-DVD is now a dead format but that shouldnt stop you buying what is arguably the best upscaling DVD player for SD. I bought one of these as well as loads of HD-DVD disks that are being sold extemely cheap.
Here is a chance to experience Hi Def on the cheap and I will use this until Blu Ray players get down to a more reasonable price, and when they sort out the BD format. Most Blu Ray players bar the PS3 are redundant with what will be new format BD disks. Now is not the time to buy a Blu Ray player unless its a PS3, and even a PS3 is not a great BD player itself.
buy one its cheap! March 14, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful

For
The colours are amazing as is the clarity and depth of the picture and the quality of the sound when played over the hifi. Even old tv programmes - say more than 20 years old which can be disappointing come up very well indeed in terms of clarity across the whole screen..
Against 1The most disappointing aspect is that the quality of the sound on CDs is nowhere near as good as it is when playing DVDs. Also, the player unlike conventional DVD players has a fan the noise of which becomes noticeable during quiet passages. So the machine is not an adequate substitute for a stand alone CD player. 2 .It does not have some features I have been used to with previous DVD players. For example although Amazon says it has a zoom facility this is not the case - this is ironic as the player provides such a sharp picture that close ups be very good too. 3. It takes a very long time to boot up when you put a disc in. 4. Check the details regarding formats closely - it does not allow one to view JPEGs for example
5 The HD side of things was a bit of a damp squib for this viewer. I was expecting a truly spectacular picture but in reality it was no better than many a recent ordinary DVD. True that there are a lot of higher budget "making of" extras than one is used to but I am not sure I would want to watch any of them a second time as it has to be faced that just because somebody is good at his particular contribution to a film it is no guarantee that he will be a good communicator (or photogenic for that matter) and nobody is likely to say anything out of place in case it affects their chance of getting more work.
Conclusion - Despite being less than bowled over by HD DVDs I am very satisfied with the quality of ordinary DVDs - it means that for the first time in my life I can enjoy picture quality at home which is the equal of the best to be seen in tvs on display in the shops.
