Very good but.... April 22, 2008 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is one of the best British films of the year ,some might say the best , and is certainly and International success.
The best thing about the movie is that ,although brave ,is a good adaptation of the book. James Mcevoy provides another impeccable performance matched by Saoirse Ronan and Romola Garai ( watch this two young actresses ) and Knightley ( although she delivers a few good lines she is almost brushed aside but the other actresses ).
The cinematography is excellent and the flavors of a real epic , the scene in Dunkirk alone makes the movie worth watching.
The problem with the movie is the traveling backwards and forward in time which can be annoying , confusing and sometimes pointless .The movie lacks continuity and the final interview in present time takes the viewer away from the 1940's and back to a cold modern TV studio.
Extras. Very interesting Making-of documentary ( goes on for 20 minutes and gives very good insight in locations and filming techniques .
Overall I really enjoyed this movie and certainly would recommend buying it, however I can not give it 5 stars as the back and forth in time destroys a bit of the drama of the story.
4 and a half stars.
What was all the hype for??? April 18, 2008 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
I was so dissapointed with this film after hearing, not too mention all the reviews and build up before its release. Not the best part for Keira Knightley. Sadly, I became bored with the story line and ended up doing the ironing, how sad is that. Please don't expect too much. Probably worth viewing at 5 but not at the price I paid for it!!!
hyped, but deservedly so. April 16, 2008 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
I feel to say this film is massively over-hyped is unfair. I think the beginning and end of this film are excellent, the middle part drags a little more, as in the book, it's a more convoluted piece of plot.
Overall this film if a great piece which gives a believable account of one girls guilt for a simple misconception from her childhood.
If you enjoyed the book you will not be dissappointed, it is very true to the novel.
utter rubbish April 10, 2008 8 out of 35 found this review helpful
I dont normaly write reveiws on here, but i saw this while looking for something else. Its hyped up to the eye balls, and as with the films "that everyone" is talking about is complete crap! It was a pointless story with some of the worst acting since Torchwood!! I love movies and dvd's but iam starting to get anoyed that hollywood cant kick out any Brilliant movies, like Scarface, Platoon, Titanic, Seven etc. Theres hasent been a good movie for years, which has forces me to hunt for great 80's/90's film to keep me entertained. The last one i watched was jesse james, with brad pitt, again, Crap!
Could've Done Something Better With Our Time April 9, 2008 7 out of 30 found this review helpful
It's well acted and cinematically gorgeous but the story is slow and lacks depth.
Some scenes are drawn out and/or the music is so overpowering that my hubby and I frequently gave each other side glances of "Okay, we get the point. Get on with it". It has a downbeat ending which we hadn't expected. All-in-all we were left thinking, and saying, What was the point of that?! Not entertainment at all. Dreary and downbeat film trying to be super artsy.
Only rated a 15 because of brief but no nudity passionate sex scene and the use of the most foul of swear words (though never actually utter thankfully. You see it written down and it plays a pivotal part in the hero's downfall).
Felt we wasted our time with this one.
